The mine was used in ancient times as a silver and lead mine. It was used in modern times as a fluorite mine by the Gewerkschaft Finstergrund. Mining ceased 1972. In 1982 the mine was reopened as a visitors mine. It is just a few hundred meters off the main road from Wieden to Utzenfeld. As of 2016 the mine is open from Mai to October on Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays. Other times can be inquired at their website (www.finstergrund.de) Currently only the level 5 adit is accessible via an underground electric train. During opening times the forest road is open but the road will be closed in the evenings. Parking is right in front of the mine entrance. There is also a little restaurant at the site.
