Habit: pseudotetragonal bipyramids with eight large plane faces. The corners of the crystals are often modified by paired faces which are usually only resolved under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The underlying orthorhombic symmetry is sometimes betrayed by elongation along one of the perpendicular axes, which alters the apparently bipyramidal crystal shape to a squat prism.

Description: First British occurrence for this species. Mostly observed in thin sections. Can be seen with x10 loupe in hand specimens, but easily mistaken for amphibole or edge-views of dark mica (although the latter is almost absent in most of the chevkinite-bearing rocks of St Kilda). Red haloes are commonly seen around specimens in the Conachair granite.

Description: There is some dispute about the confirmation of plattnerite from the Leadhills-Wanlockhead Orefield. Although it has been now confirmed on specimens collected from the Susanna Mine in 2010. It would appear that many old specimens have been found wanting, mostly turning out to be Mn-Oxides or mottramite. Work is continuing to try and locate an authentic 'old' specimen in the Natural History Museum London and the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow.

Description: Bronze coloured scaly and slickensided coatings on fracture surfaces in serpentinite. XRF analysis confirms the correct composition for pyroaurite/sjögrenite. Effervescence in acid confirms carbonate. XRD is ambiguous, giving reasonable matches for both minerals, but hampered by their poorly crystalline nature, and consequent poor quality diffraction patterns. Many of the distinguishing reflections for each mineral are missing, and extra ones are present. A mixture of both minerals seems likely, but needs confirmation. (Unpublished work by Dr S. Moreton).
