Following the implementation on 1 January 2011 of the Kallikratis Plan, the administrative divisions of Greece consist of two main levels: the regions and the municipalities. In addition, a number of decentralized administrations overseeing the regions exist as part of the Ministry of the Interior, but are not entities of local government. The old prefectures/departments were either abolished and split up or transformed into regional units in 2011.
The plan reduced the number of municipalities from 1,033 to 325.

The 74 regional units are administrative units of Greece. They are subdivisions of the country's 13 regions, further subdivided into municipalities. The regional units are comparable in size and, in the mainland, coterminous with the pre-"Kallikratis" prefectures of Greece.

Note: Officially, permits must be sought for any mineral collecting or field work in Greece (http://portal.igme.gr/pls/portal/url/PAGE/IGME_PORTAL/IGME_HOME_PAGE_EXT/products_and_data/FREEDNLDS). No archaeological sites or caves must be worked on. Illegal export of archaeological items is severely punished.

'Gahnite-Hercynite Series'
Description: SEM/EDS analyses have shown that spinel in the study area is a solid solution between hercynite (49 to 71 %mole) and gahnite (24 to 49 %mole) whilst the Mg component is negligible. Two groups of spinel can be distinguished in terms of the gahnite component: group “A” with gahnite content ranging from 24 to 38 %mole and group “B” with higher contents of the gahnite component (46 - 49 %mole). Chemical zoning was detected only in group “A” with crystals showing an enrichment in the hercynite component toward the rims whilst the reverse pattern is true for the gahnite component. Spinel with even higher gahnite content (as much as 62 %mole) has been previously reported (Ockenga 2000) in Ikaria.
