An island nation in the Pacific Ocean, some 500 miles (800 km) east of the Philippines and 2000 miles (3200 km) south of Tokyo.

Palau consists of some of the westernmost of the Caroline Islands, in Micronesia.

In 1994, Palau became a freely associated state of the USA (status between a protectorate and an independent country).
