Auburn is a city and the county seat in Androscoggin County. The county was created in 1854 from segments of adjacent counties: Cumberland County, Kennebec County, and Lincoln County. Mineralogically, Auburn is best known for granite pegmatites in the western portion of the city and a small hill known as Mount Apatite. Interest in these granite pegmatites began in the mid-1860's and prospecting occurred about 1872 when several rare minerals were recovered. Interest in the deposits had more intense activity in the 1880s when mineral collectors and mineral dealers started formal excavations to recover gem tourmaline and interesting rare minerals. Commercial interest in ceramic grade feldspar began in the mid to late 1890s when feldspar was shipped to Topsham, Maine for processing. A feldspar mill was built within a few kilometers of Mount Apatite in 1906 and the mill was in operation until 1929. Sporadic mining has continued by mineral collectors.
