The state with the longest name! The formal name of this state is: "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations". Part of the Appalachians (Boston platform). Western part of state is granitic and metamorphic rocks. Eastern portion contains Narragansett basin. State has been glaciated.

There are 5 counties in the state. The counties are further divided into 31 towns, 8 cities, and 1 undefined area (consisting of water). [Source: US Census Bureau]

There were changes to the boundary between Rhode Island and Massachusetts in 1862, and the boundary was adjusted again in 1897.
