Description: The unspecific nature of the report precludes a quick dismissal of katophorite from the locality's list. The method used by Emerson, demonstrated that he certainly had an alkali amphibole, but the optical properties with the various alkali amphiboles are sufficiently ill-defined as to make such an identification untenable, especially given the variety of nomenclature changes and additions within the amphibole group. For example, Emerson's "katophorite" from Quincy is certainly a riebeckite based on the chemical analyses of other specimens studied by subsequent authors. If katophorite actually exists in Massachusetts, there does not seem to be a chemically verified specimen known.
