In marine Lower Triassic Gavenwood Tuffs, Murihiku Supergroup.

The two minerals were discovered from an examination of rocks containing celadonite. The material was so small even electron microprobes battled to identify the material properly, and it needed to be sent to the University of Michigan, for specialist study.

Celadonite is partly responsible for the dark green colour of the sedimentary rocks and volcanic ash beds that show in the hills. The new species occur as sub-micrometre grains in vesicle interiors, both are blue-green in colour, and replace glass shards. It is intimately associated with heulandite, and intergrown with chlorite, bethierine, and corrensite.

In hand specimens the host rock is dark greyish-green with reddish flecks, showing feldspar clasts 1-3 mms in diameter, with darker patches of micropumice and lapilli. Other species found in the hand specimens, but not associated with the new species were plagioclase, titanite, pyrite, quartz, albite, siderite, labradorite, augite, oligoclase, magnetite, hornblende, biotite, and rare prehnite.

The study site was near Pukerau, just east of Gore, however the material is likely widespread, the hills covering some 60 kilometres, trending east-west.
