Da Qaidam Salt Lake comprises both the saline lake and the surrounding salt flat, with a total area of about 235 kmΒ². It lies in a closed-drainage sub-basin of the northern Qaidam Basin with a large catchment area of more than 2,000 kmΒ². Geologically, the catchment area is situated in the tectonic belt between the Qilian Block and the Qaidam Block.
