Chitral District was the largest district in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan, covering an area of 14,850 km², before being divided into Upper Chitral District and Lower Chitral District in 2018.
Chitral is the northwesternernmost region of Pakistan on the southern flank of the Hindu Kush range, which forms the western segment of the broad mountain arc of the greater Himalayan system.
Rocks from Devonian to Cretaceous regionally metamorphosed of low to medium grade are intruded by Upper Cretaceous granite plutons.
Although prospections were promising for copper, silver, gold, tungsten, lead and antimony, high mountain terrain and lack of infrastructures hamper mining activity.
Chitral borders west with Kunar, Nuristan and Badakhshan, gem-richest provinces in Afghanistan.
When visiting lapidary and jewelry shops in Chitral town, I saw some tourmalines very likely of Afghan origin. When you ask for the locality, you always get the same answer: "Chitral! From the mountains of Chitral!" In fact, they were right, Paprok is only 25 km east from the Chitral border. The shorter way from Paprok to Peshawar inevitably passes through Chitral.
