The Mount Lofty Ranges are a range of mountains in the Australian state of South Australia, which for a small part of its length borders the east of Adelaide. The part of the range in the vicinity of Adelaide is called the Adelaide Hills and defines the eastern border of the Adelaide Plains.

The Mount Lofty Ranges stretch from the southernmost point of the Fleurieu Peninsula at Cape Jervis northwards for over 300 kilometres (ca. 186 mi) before petering out north of Peterborough. In the vicinity of Adelaide, they separate the Adelaide Plains from the extensive plains that surround the Murray River and stretch eastwards to Victoria.

The Heysen Trail traverses almost the entire length of the ranges, crossing westwards to the Flinders Ranges near Hallett.

The mountains have a Mediterranean climate with moderate rainfall brought by south-westerly winds, hot summers and cool winters. The southern ranges are wetter (with 900 millimetres (35 in) of rain per year) than the northern ranges (400 millimetres (16 in)).

Description: Numerous specimens were collected by former Burra Burra mine geologist, Graham Sweetman during 1980.
They were located in a weathered feldspar porphyry plug 3 m in diameter, at the base of the open cut, on the last bench mined before the mine closed. While many of these specimens show a very thin coating, and usually have pyrite clearly visible, G. Sweetman was able to recover several which on close examination suggested there is at least 1 mm of solid chalcocite coating, over a previously unaltered pyrite dodecahedrons. Aka: ducktownite.

Description: Ernstite is a variety or alteration of eosphorite. Oxidized childrenite with ferric greater than ferrous iron is not yet named. On the dump of the No. 2 Shaft, it is found as turbid, sea green, sharp, unmodified cubes lining joints in the mica schist country rock. In this habit it could easily be mistaken for fluorite."

Description: "Scorodite the first of the arsenates to crystallize, is found throughout the mine as crusts of minute glittering crystals lining small vugs or coating the walls of thin cracks or joints in quartz, limonite or arsenopyrite. It commonly occurs as equant pyramids, terminated by a near square basal plane, but in rare cases it has crystallized in forms moderately elongated on the b axis, which show the (101) hemipyramid, as well as pyramid and base. The scorodite ranges in colour from pale sea green to white, colourless and various shades of brown. It always has a bright glassy lustre and varies from turbid to completely transparent."
