The cliffs behind the bay are more well-known as a classic exposure of British Jurassic geology, and as a fossil locality, than as a mineral location. Apparently, however, the strata contain small lenses of evaporite minerals, predominantly gypsum. Pyrite/Marcasite nodules to be found within the lower chalk. These are amongst the best to be found in the south of England
