The Blue Mountain nepheline syenite gneiss forms a series of prominent ridges enveloped by metasedimentary rocks, all of Grenville age. Mining began in 1935-36 and continues to this day. The Blue Mountain quarry is one of several quarries and some underground stopes that have been opened in various parts of the nepheline syenite by several companies.

Sabina (1987) lists two of the quarries, the Blue Mountain and the Nephton. Other names appearing in the literature include the Cabin Ridge quarry, No.4 Ridge, Indusmin quarry, Craig pit and Mather pit. Caution should be exercised in assigning locality names to mineral specimens without specific attribution.
