An island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean.

The archipelago is some 1,750 km (1,090 mi) east of northern Australia, 500 km (310 mi) north-east of New Caledonia, west of Fiji, and south of the Solomon Islands.

Settled by Melanesians in the 14th century BCE; charted by Portuguese explorer Pedro Fernandes de Queirós in 1606, by French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville in 1768, and by British explorer James Cook in 1774.

Settled by British missionaries in the 19th century.
