Also known as Slovak Republic.

Since 1949 (except 1990–1996), Slovakia has been divided into a number of kraje (singular kraj; usually translated as "Regions"). Their number, borders and functions have been changed several times, but most of them retained their borders from the 11th century. There are currently 8 regions of Slovakia. Each region (kraj) is further sub-divided into counties/districts (okresy, sing. okres). There currently are 79 counties in Slovakia.

- Great Moravian Empire (833 - 907)
- different pricipalities (907 - 997)
