Slipfontein, also known as Big Ben Mine, is located 70 km north of Brits, 64 km west of Bella Bella, on the farm Slipfontein 551 KQ. The deposit was discovered in 1936 by R.W. van Rensburg and mined until 1941 by Fluorite and Minerals (Pty) Ltd. It was the latter who coined the name Big Ben Fluorspar Mine. During the late 1970s, Esso Exploration (Pty) Ltd drilled four boreholes that helped to define the size and mineralisation of the Slipfontein deposit. There are also uranium anomalies associated with feldspar-quartz-bastnäsite in the upper part of the pegmatite.
