Name(s) in local language(s):
Valle di Champorcher, Valle d'Aosta, Italia
It is a right-side valley of Aosta Valley, named after Champorcher, the main municipality of this valley, and drained by the brook Ayasse. From bottom to top, the territory of Champorcher Valley belongs to the municipalities of Hône, Pont Bozet, and Champorcher. The municipal territory of Champorcher encompasses the whole upper valley, which includes the upper course of Ayasse brook and various tributaries.
The geological setting of the upper Champorcher Valley is quite complex, because here the Piedmont metaophiolite nappe is geometrically interposed between the Gran Paradiso Pennidic nappe and the overlying Austroalpine System (which includes the north-western part of Sesia-Lanzo zone, the Glacier-Rafray klippe, the Tour Ponton klippe, and the Santanel unit).
From a mineralogical point of view, Champorcher Valley remains a little-known territory, although various mineral localities have been already described in the 19th century.
Good specimens of crystallised minerals are found in the rodingite bodies associated with serpentinites and in metabasites. The first report on finds of rodingite minerals in the Giasset area (NE of Dondena) and along the northern face of Punta Champ Chevry (SW of Champorcher) has been published by Mattirolo (1899).
