The Reservoir Cabonga Terrane is an allochtonous slab metamorphosed under granulite grade conditions and transported onto the migmatites of the Grenvillian Parautochtone

Besides the claims of GLP Mining on the east shore of the reservoir and a copper-nickel property of CopperOne to the north of the terrane, the area is mostly open to collectors. No historial mining records could be found.

Fluorescence: Some of the pink spinel have a weak red fluorescence under UV
Description: Spinel is ubiquitous at Cabonga as it is an aluminium rich granulite grade terrane. The best specimen are found in coarse to pegmatitic marble dykes. Blue is the most common color followed by red. Rare pink Zn bearing spinel up to 10mm also exists. Some of the marbles are very rich in spinel but unfortunately specimen bigger than 3 or 4mm are very rare. In the marble spinel is often associated with apatite and also included in the apatite.
