In 2014 separatist forces declared independence from Ukraine and, as of 2018, conflict continues between separatist forces backed by Russia and the Ukrainian armed forces, with a significant percentage of Donetsk Oblast under separatist control.
As of July 2020, the number of districts is in the process of being reduced to eight. This includes territories not under control of Ukrainian government, where the new territorial division can not be implemented. The eight districts are:
- Bakhmut (Бахмутський район), the center is in the town of Bakhmut;
- Donetsk (Донецький район), the center is in the city of Donetsk;
- Horlivka (Горлівський район), the center is in the town of Horlivka;
- Kalmiuske (Кальміуський район), the center is in the town of Kalmiuske (Komsomolske);
- Kramatorsk (Краматорський район), the center is in the town of Kramatorsk;
- Mariupol (Маріупольський район), the center is in the city of Mariupol;
- Pokrovsk (Покровський район), the center is in the town of Pokrovsk;
- Volnovakha (Волноваський район), the center is in the town of Volnovakha.
