Gjesdal municipality covers a land area of 560 km2. The landscape is dominated by fertile valleys and fiords running parallel with the main fault zones in N-S and SW/NE direction with mountains up to 900m inbetween. The dominating rocks are from the Gotic (1.4 GA and older) and Sveco-Norwegian (1GA and older)orogeny. The gneisses migmatites with some amphiblites saw high grade (granulite facies) metamorphosis during the Sveco-Norwagian orogeny. The highest elevated areas are dominated by monzonite intrusives. There are no well known mineral localities in the municipality.
