In 1783 a group of 25 men formed an association to explore a quartz vein on the east side of Oak Hill that contained traces of partially decomposed iron, lead, and copper. They hoped to strike silver, but after five years and excavating about 50 feet downward, the project was abandoned.

Pieces of the earth, which they dug before they entered the [bed]rock, had the appearance of yellow lead, and were considerably sulphurous." However, Whitney reports, "either from the unskillfulness of the mineralists, or for want of perseverance in their employers, the shining ore has not yet been discovered." In 1789, despite an expenditure of $1,100 on the endeavor, the company was "amicably dissolved."
