Langlade County is covered by thick glacial drift, lakes, marshes and forests, thus bedrock exposures are sparse. The southern half of the County is underlain by igneous rocks of the 1.5 billion year old Wolf River Batholith. The northern portion is underlain by a complex mix of older granitic rocks, meta-volcanic and meta-sedimentary rocks. These were deformed during the Penokean Orogeny, a continent-to-continent collision event occurring about 1.8 billion years old. The glacial drift may yield interesting specimens to the determined collector, including drift copper, "Lake Superior" agates, placer gold and perhaps a drift diamond or two.
