A borough and small town founded in 1818.

Originally a coal and railroad town.

The town name was changed from Mauch Chunk to Jim Thorpe in 1954.

Jim Thorpe was the first Native American to win a gold medal (two, in fact) at the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm (pentatholon and decathlon). Thorpe also played six seasons of professional baseball. He also played for six teams in the National Football League and also as a professional basketball player with an all American Indian team.

Coal was originally mined in Summit Hill, approximately eight miles west of the town. Anthracite coal was initially transported via the river and later by the railroad from 1827.

Mineralization is in conglomerate, Mauch Chunk Formation (Mississippian).

Autunite was first reported in 1874 near the town of Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe), however test mining was not conducted until 1953 at the Mount Pisgah deposit (https://www.mindat.org/loc-4080.html)(observations noted as mineralization in pods and rolls in the basal conglomerate of the Mauch Chunk Formation).

Two sub localities, both with mineralized zones in ridges along Route 209, include:

- Mauck Chunk Ridge (https://www.mindat.org/loc-204634.html), just south;

- and Pisgah Mountain (https://www.mindat.org/loc-4080.html), just north of Route 903 bridge to Jim Thorpe.

Additional localities aprox. 4-5 mi. North along the Lehigh River in the ridges along an abandoned railway:

- The Penn Haven Junction occurrence (https://www.mindat.org/loc-125861.html) is just south of the point where Black Creek runs into the Lehigh River.

- Butcher Hollow (https://www.mindat.org/loc-213313.html) is approx. 0.9 mi further south (0.4 mi. S. of Penn Haven Junction).

- The Packerton Junction uranyl occurrence (https://www.mindat.org/loc-29583.html) is less than a mile South of Jim Thorpe, along Route 209, just North of Packerton.
