Some fumaroles are still active in the South-West of the Grande Terre island.

This is the largest of the islands emergent above the Kerguelen Plateau. The island is largely covered by thick piles of flood basalts locally intruded by intermediate to alkaline intrusive complexes.

The plateau basalts have undergone zeolite deposition in a manner similar to that described from other thick basalt sequences such as in Iceland (Walker, 1960). Giret, et al (1992) have shown that zeolitisation is related to a period of high regional heat flow that accompanied a pulse of intrusive activity at approximately 12 – 13 ma. They found that the zeolite mineral assemblages were arranged in depth and temperature dependant zones.
