This region, located south-east of Roanne, is composed of early carboniferous (Visean) rocks (andesites, ignimbrites, limestones, sandstones, anthracifer tuffs...) cut by microgranite and quartz veins. Several small coalmines were operated in this area (mining claims of Combre and Regny) during the 19th century.
