Iron meteorite, Octahedrite (IAB-sLL, Om)
Find, 1938; 1169.5 kg

The large meteorite (105 x 70 x 40 cm) was found lying on ancient lava beds about 2 miles W of Goose Lake and about 1¼ miles S of the Oregon border, some 40 miles N from Alturas. The largely kamacite-dominated interior is also rich in plessite (20 vol%) with taenite somewhat discontinuous. Accessories troilite, schreibersite, and graphite are accompanied by very minor amounts of additional sulfides, carbides, and even a nitride (carlsbergite).

One of 13 IAB meteorites with a mass greater than a ton, Goose Lake is the largest meteorite found from California (1938). Trace amounts of Au, Ga & Ir place it in the IAB-sLL subgroup whose 31 members constitute one of the larger IAB subgroups. The main mass, largely intact, is with the U.S. National Museum (Washington).
