Historical locality, known since a very long time for the presence of gems (sapphire, zircon).

"(Coming from Brives-Charensac). Start from Puy on the N88 and go left on the D38. In the region of 'Les Avits' one can find quartz." [Belot, 1978]

Belot (incorrectly?) states that 'Les Avits' is part of Coubon, when in reality (according to Google Maps), it is part of Arsac-en-Velay.
