The name of the department comes from Mor-Bihan, a Breton name meaning "small sea" in connection with the famous enclosed sea: the Gulf of Morbihan. The area of the department is 6,823 km² for 905 km of coastline. It is bordered by the Atlantic ocean near which many megalithic sites (Carnac, Locmariaquer, etc.) can be observed.

The Morbihan Gulf has 42 islands. Outside this enclosed sea, in the "Mor Braz" ("the great sea" in the Breton language, for the ocean), there are four inhabited islands: Houat, Hoëdic, Belle-Ile-en-Mer, and Groix.
The Morbihan area covers a little more than one-tenth of the Armorican Massif area. The highest summit of Morbihan lies at the east part of the Montagnes Noires (Black Mountains): The Calotte St. Joseph (292 meters) whereas the highest point is situated north of Gourin city (301 meters).
