This group of mines straddles the borders between the civil parishes of Perranuthnoe, St Hilary, Germoe and Breage. St Aubyn and Grylls Mine, located just south of Great Western Mine in Breage parish, was also worked for some time together with this group. The mines are situated close together, worked on the same lodes and are connected underground, but most of them appear to have been operated independently for some periods of time. Their plans overlap considerably, suggesting several changes in sett boundaries, and many of the smaller mines cannot now be distinguished.

The early history of the mines is not known, nor is the nature of the deposits. Much of the work was done by private miners who recovered tin and copper ores from shallow depths. Attempts to work the lodes at a large scale were not successful.
