Much the greatest of the "Lovell mines", East Wheal Lovell enjoyed a short but rich existence in the latter 1800s.
The mine consisted of two separate groups of workings, Tregonebris and Fatworks. Tregonebris was worked in the 18th C, with working resuming in the 1850s. After workings reached a depth of 47 fathoms the mine became unprofitable and the engine was moved to the nearby Fatworks, which then worked until about 1875. The engine was then moved back to Tregonebris, which was deepened to about 100 fathoms, and which then worked to 1881, but with little success.
