Troodos igneous massif


A mountain range stretching across most of the western side of Cyprus.

Several chromite occurrences and mines are located around Mount Olympus, the highest peak of the Troodos mountain range. A total of 64 chromite occurrences (most of them subeconomic) have been mapped by Greenbaum.
Most of them are in Nicosia District, some also in Limassol District.

From Greenbaum (1977):
"Chromite has been mined in the Troodos area from a number of prospects in the western part of the ultramafic outcrop since about 1924 (Inghamg, 1959). Apart from the recovery of minor quantities of chromite from several small and highly brecciated orebodies in the Limassol Forest area and from similar occurrences in the Paphos distric, these are the only important sources of metallurgical grade (high Cr : low Fe) chrome ore on Cyprus. Production in recent year has come mainly from the Chrome Mine, situated close to the Summit of Mount Olympus at an elevation of about 1,650 m above a zone containing several steeply dipping, massive, podiform orebodies in dunite which, since 1931, has yielded in excess of one-half million metric tons of ore. Typical production grade ore after concentration contains 47 percent Cr2O3 and has a Cr/Fe ratio of about 2.7.

All the known deposits either have surface expression or have been located at subsurface extensions of known ore shoots during mining. Sixty-four separate chromite occurrences, most of them sub-economic, have been mapped and studied during the present investigation. They occur within a total area of some 16 km2. Most of the deposits, and all of the larger ones, were previously excavated by prospectors and much of the ore removed, with the result that many of the original field relationships are now obscured."
