Two gypsum quarries located about 2 km west of Moncalvo, near Gessi hamlet. The main quarry, whose official name is Monferrato, is exploited underground and is higly mechanized. The entrance to the underground workings is referenced on IGM 1:25000 Tav. II S.O. "Moncalvo" Foglio 57 "Vercelli" at 32T MQ 4032 8905 (UTM coordinates of the inclined shaft entrance).
The open pit (about 300 m SW of the main quarry) can be recognized on the CTR - Carta Tecnica Regionale 1:10000 (official technical regional map) of Piemonte, sections 157.110, 157.120, 157.150 and 157.160.
The two quarries are presently operated by the company Fassa S.r.l. Other open-pit and underground quarries were exploited in this area in the past.

At Monferrato quarry gypsum forms two upper levels with a microcrystalline texture and three lower levels with a macrocrystalline texture (selenite). Sometimes large gypsum crystals may be observed. Minor sulphur also occurs.
