The Emerald goldrush (1858-59) was a small rush for the era, official records say up to 1000 diggers rushed the field, the digging population would have been no more than a few hundred at most over the following few decades.
Gold nuggets up to 5 ounces are recorded from the sluicing claims of the 1890's but most of the gold is quite fine.
The diggings are mostly along the Woori Yallock creek and creeks and gulleys flowing into it not far from the town of Emerald, a great deal of the old diggings have been sluiced away.

This geological map and associated information on rock units at or nearby to the coordinates given for this locality is based on relatively small scale geological maps provided by various national Geological Surveys. This does not necessarily represent the complete geology at this locality but it gives a background for the region in which it is found.
