La Bruyère, Welkenraedt, Plombières-Vieille Montagne (Plombières-Altenberg) District, Verviers, Liège Province, Belgium
The La Bruyère mine in Welkenraedt (1878-1883)
The mine was located on the Welkenraedt fault line from the NW to the SE.
On this fault, the following mines can be found: Wilcour, Nouvelle Espérence, St-Paul, La Bruyère, and Heggelsbrück.
The La Bruyére mine was connected underground with the Saint-Paul.
The zinc mine was part of the Altenberg concession with its head office in Kelmis. The mine was part of the Belgian zinc group Vieille Montagne.
As early as in 1409 a sale agreement in La Bruyere was mentioned in the literature.
Also between 1765 and 1772, ores were collected.
The La Bruyère mine was exploited by Vieille Montagne between 1878 and 1883.
They dug to a depth of 59 meters.
The production between 1878 and 1883 amounted to 100,000 tons of calamine and 75,000 tons of sulfides. The extracted ores were mixed with the ores of the Saint-Paul mine. The mine was more or less an expansion of the St-Paul mine. The produced ores went to the wash plant at the Altenberg mine in Kelmis by rail.
