Locality type:
The Murchison Shire is about 900 kilometres north of Perth, covers 41 173 square kilometres, and has a population of only 114. Even by Western Australian standards this is low. The shire is the only one in Australia without a town, and encompasses instead 29 sheep stations. There is something called the Murchison Settlement developed by the shire. This has the Shire Clerk's house, shire offices, a pastoral museum, caravan park and backpacker accommodation (described as basic by the shire), roadhouse, 5 polo fields! and sporting facilities.
The lack of people means the shire is a favoured location for radio telescope facilities which are used to search the Universe for other planets, comets, stars, passing Martians etc. These facilities need a lack of noise. There are already two in the shire, with the Square Kilometre Array presently under construction. This will be the world's largest and most sensitive radio telescope.
No major active mines are known in the shire at present, but it does contain many small historical mining sites, hidden away in the scrub and difficult often to locate. The shire also contains Jack Hills which has the oldest zirons in the world, and has shed light on the early history of the planet.
I quote the shire's webpage: ' when travelling in the shire it is a good idea to carry sufficient water to make use of in emergencies, and extra tools and spares in the vehicle. There are no mechanical repair services available, and distances between (sheep) stations are long. Mobile phone coverage does not function in most areas. All roads in the shire (I think there is one) are unsealed.'

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Basin Groups to Tonian : 4348 ± 3 Ma to 744 ± 25 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
