In May 1881, while fencing a property, the Barnett Brothers discovered alluvial gold on the Baker property. The Morialta Mining co. was soon formed, but only lasted 6 months.
Further mining took place in 1887 when a fresh discovery, ignited new interest. A display of gold nuggets from this site was awarded a diploma at the London Mining Exhibition in 1890.
At least five gullies have been mined on the property, which has seen numerous periods of mining until as late as 1935. While the production records suggest a total of 13oz (404gm) of gold was retrieved from this site, it is known that the property owner bought 50oz of nuggets form the miners during the first rush. It is also believed that much more was mined here, without being recorded.

Note: This location should not be confused with Fifth Creek (Stainbanks), a copper mining locality.
