Engebøfjellet-eklogitten, Naustdal, Sunnfjord, Vestland, Norge
One of the largest eclogite bodies in the Western Gneiss Region, Norway, covering an area of about 2500 x 500 m.
From the NGU datasheet (Deposit 4647 - 001 Engebøfjellet):
"Engebøfjellet was recognized as a rutile-rich eclogite around 1975 by chief geologist Hans-Peter Geis from the Elkem company. Subsequent studies by the NGU, Elkem and S&F County in 1978-89 and DuPont/Conoco during the 1990'ies confirmed the deposit's potential as a world-class source of rutile. Additionally, garnet represents an important added value, especially of interest for use as abrasive.
In 2006 the mining rights were taken over by Nordic Mining ASA. In 2015 they were granted permission for their mine waste deposition plans, allowing the waste to be depositted in the fjord at a depth of 300 m. The Nordic Mining company plans to produce 80.000 t/y rutile concentrate based upon the mining of 4 Mt/y ore at a cut-off grade of 3% TiO2."
The website of Nordic Mining does not present (Jan. 2022) concrete information on the current status of the plans to commence mining at Engebøfjellet.
Additionally, mining company Arctic Mineral Resources (AMR), has obtained the rights to mine parts of this deposit for garnet, with rutile as subordinate by-product. These two companies seem to be entangled in a bitter fight over the mining rights (Situation Jan. 2022).
