This locality began as two separate mines, the Mount Rhine and the Mount Frederick.
Mount Rhine started in 1870 as a Silver/Lead mine, and the Mount Frederick in 1888 to the north also as a Silver/Lead mine.

Although the presence of copper minerals was well noted, copper was never actually mined at either site.
The Mount Frederick mine only lasted a short time before becoming part of the Mount Rhine mine.

In 1889 ochre was discovered and as well as Silver/Lead, the Mt. Rhine Mining Co. began mining this too. Going on to build their own paint factory in Adelaide. Lack of a market for their paint and low levels of Silver/Lead ore forced the closure in 1892.

A small amount of mining for both gold and ochre was also done here during the 1950’s and 1960’s
