The Province of Nuoro was founded on January 2, 1927 and included the municipalities (comuni) of the former districts of Nuoro (belonged to Sassari Province) and Lanusei (belonged to Cagliari Province), and also the municipalities (comuni) of Birori, Borore, Bortigali, Bosa, Dualchi, Flussio, Macomer, Magomadas, Modolo, Montresta, Noragugume, Sagama, Sindia, Suni, Tinnura, Tresnuraghes, Cuglieri, Sennariolo, and Scano di Montiferro (taken from the former Oristano district, Cagliari Province).

The Province of Oristano, founded on August 28, 1974 from sections of the provinces of Cagliari and Nuoro, incorporated from the latter the municipalities of Tresnuraghes, Cuglieri, Sennariolo, and Scano di Montiferro. In 2005 from the Province of Nuoro other 10 municipalities
(Bosa, Flussio, Genoni, Laconi, Magomadas, Modolo, Montresta, Sagama, Suni, and Tinnura) joined the Province of Oristano.

In 2005 from the Province of Nuoro 13 municipalities (Escalaplano, Escolca, Esterzili, Gergei, Isili, Nuragus, Nurallao, Nurri, Orroli, Sadali, Serri, Seulo, and Villanova Tulo) joined the Province of Cagliari.

The Province of Ogliastra, which existed de facto between 2005 and 2016, incorporated from Nuoro Province the municipalities of Arzana, Bari Sardo, Baunei, Cardedu, Elini, Giaro, Girasole, Ilbono, Jerzu, Lanusei, Loceri, Lotzorai, Osini, Perdasdefogu, Seui, Talana, Tertenìa, Tortolì, Triei, Ulassai, Urzulei, Ussassai, and Villagrande Strisaili. After dissolution of Ogliastra Province, all of its municipalities but one joined again the Province of Nuoro. The municipality of Seui joined the newest Province of South Sardinia.
