A former Ag-Zn-Au-Pb-Cu mining district located about 8 miles W of Ouray in the Uncompahgre National Forest.

The 2 camps within the district are the Sneffels Camp and the Red Mountain Camp. The Sneffels Camp is located at the head of Canyon Creek in the Imogene Basin, W of Hayden Mountain. The Red Mountain Camp is located at the head of Red Mountain Creek, E of Hayden Mountain.

Mineral deposits are generally polymetallic vein deposits (Model code 85; USGS model code 22c; deposit model name: polymetallic veins; Mark3 model number 46). Controls for ore emplacement included fissures, fractures, faults, and wall rock. Alteration includes silicification, porphlitic, argillic, advanced argillic and sericitic. Local rocks within the district include ash-flow tuff of main volcanic sequence.

Geologic structures:

Local: The Sneffels District (and the Telluride District) is in the exterior unit of the Silverton Caldera. The Red Mountain District is in the northern part of the highly faulted zone.

Regional: The Silverton Caldera has an interior down-faulted circular block, surrounded by some tilted and locally faulted rocks, surrounded by highly faulted rocks, and an exterior zone of relatively undisturbed but fissured rocks.
