Mogok (city) - and other villages nearby - has been famous for its gemstones since ancient times. The gems are found in alluvial marble gravels which derive from the metamorphosed limestones (marbles) of the Mogok metamorphic belt.

NOTE: Many specimens (e.g., mushroom tourmalines) labeled "Mogok" actually come from Momeik Township in adjacent Shan State.
