The general area is comprised of Bawmar-east, Bawmar-west and Bawmar-south. The gem mines are accessible from Kyatpyin by four-wheel vehicles or be a 20-minute walk from Ye-U-gyi.
Most of the gems are dark blue sapphires and they are mined from the soft white nepheline, using open-pit and myaw-dwin mining methods. Most dark sapphires are of low quality and seldom faceted, but used as beads. Some dark sapphires without silk may be heat treated to improve their clarity. Other dark blue sapphires are characterized by their splintery appearance, some of which display weak asterism. Small light, medium and and parti-colored blue sapphires may be cut from gemmy transparent sections, suitable for faceting up to 2 ct stones.
Rubies mostly small in size and of low-to-medium quality are found in the primary marble deposit in small-scales skarns and in the alluvium. Violet-pink, pink, red-pink and red spinels, suitable for faceting small sizes, to 2 ct.
Gem mining takes place by the use of open-pit, lebin, myaw-dwin, loo-dwin, letkya-dwin and inbyae mining methods.
Increase in gem mining and gem production in 2000-2001, by November 2003 the mining activities were reduced, but intensified in 2004. - Ted Themelis (2008) Gems and Mines of Mogok

According to recent information (Kyaw Khaing Win, pers. comm. to Harald Schillhammer 2013), there are also pegmatite occurrences in the vicinity of Bawmar village (22°56'22"N 96°24'42"E).
