Arendal is a cosy city in the south of Norway with about 45.000 inhabitants.
The area is very rich in magnetite skarns, which have been worked for over 400 years. The iron ore was generally of very good quality, and contained very little phosperous or other degrading impurities. In 1975 the last iron mine was closed. It is estimated that there have been up to 400 individual mines. 361 of these are properly registered by Simonsen (2001).

Note by Ronald Werner
Many of Simonsen's coordinates seems to be way off and useless. The altitude map clearly shows many of his coordinates not to be in the vicinity of a mine or quarry. He does not mention the use of GPS. Fortunately enough he has made maps showing the location of the localities.
Simonsen gave the mines in his registration a unique number like: 01.01,1. (Mining area - mine- access).
