Located 40 kilometres south-east of Meekatharra, along the Meekatharra-Sandstone Road. The tailing heaps can be seen 200 metres west of the road. Access to the pit is from the northern end, passing an old airstrip. Signage at the mine indicates asbestos has been found, and as this is a dangerous substance to health, care should be taken.
Gold mining leases were taken up here between 1895-1910. In 1895 an abandoned lease called The Emerald Isle Star of the East, was taken over by a syndicate and renamed Gabanintha, which is a local indigenous word of unknown origin.
From 1987 to 1991, Dominion Mining Limited produced 150 000 oz of gold from a number of open pits.
Gold is hosted by a sequence of tholeiitic and komatiite mafic and ultramafic volcanics and intrusives of the Gabanintha Formation. The sequence is bounded to the east by older granites, and overlain to the west by jaspilitic banded iron formations and epiclastic sediments of the Windaning Formation. No detailed species list has yet been found.
The area also contains the Yagahong North prospect of gold-copper mineralisation hosted in weakly sheared mafic rocks and quartz veining and silicification with pyrite sulphides.
The Gabanintha vanadium prospects are 5 kilometres south-west, and written as a separate Mindat locality.
