Known as the 'Gateway to the Outback' or the 'Crossroads of Australia', Port Augusta is situated on the northern extremes of the Spencer Gulf. It is the northern tip of the Iron Triangle, which also encompasses the townships Whyalla and Port Pirie.
While not traditionally a mining town, there is now large number of new mining ventures near the township.
