Jalanash meteorite, Bayan Ölgiy Aimag, Mongolia

Classification: Ureilite, monomict.

A single 700 gram stone was found after falling on the Ölgiy Plain in Mongolia. The Jalanash fall was witnessed on August 15, 1990. Full mineralogical descriptions of Jalanash have not appeared in ready available publications, but microstructures in Jalanash pigeonite have been the object of some recent studies of Jalanash’s microstructures. Pigeonite is stable at ambient temperature only when cooled very rapidly.

Ureilites are known for their curious combination of cumulate silicates (mostly olivine and pyroxene) mixed with elemental carbon. The carbon itself is always an enigmatic graphite-diamond amalgam. The ureilites also usually contain a number of minor opaque minerals such as kamacite (meteoritic iron) and troilite. The ureilites are particularly intriguing because their microscopic textures may have been due to both vapor condensation and to shock impact. Both the relative importance and the timing of these nebular and collisional processes does not appear to be a settled matter at this time.
