The municipal territory of Ploaghe mainly consists of Miocene and Plio-Pleistocene volcanics and Miocene sedimentary rocks of the Sardinian Rift (also known as Fossa Sarda rift system).

The Miocene volcanic rocks are part of the Anglona volcanic district [see http://www.mindat.org/loc-248294.html] and form various fields, located east, north, and north-west of Ploaghe. They consist of domes of porphyritic andesite lavas, basaltic andesite lava flows, welded rhyolitic ignimbrites, and pyroclastic flow deposits.

The Plio-Pleistocene volcanic rocks consist of alkaline basalts and near the village of Ploaghe form a E-W trending belt, which culminates in Monte San Matteo (481 m a.s.l.).

Volcanics rocks, mainly as road building material, have been excavated at numerous quarries, active (Fiorosu, Funtanedda Ulumu, and Santa Giulia) and abandoned (Buredda, Meraja, Monte Perucci-Selvani, Serras, etc.).

Wood opal has been found to west of Ploaghe, towards Bagni di San Martino, at the contact between ignimbrites and calcareous rocks (Barelli, 1835; La Marmora, 1857; Jervis, 1881).
