"Stern" (star) is the appellation of the star shaped crossroad: Schierke village - Schierke station - Elend village - Wernigerode (and some smaller roads).
Near this Place, down to Schierke village, was working a small quarry in weathered granite for road metal. In the 1970s the abandoned quarry has been filled with waste and is remediated now. No finds are possible anymore.
At one time the quarry works disclosed a quartz vein containing amethyst.
