Underground gold mine, started in 1909 and closed in 1959. The mine is notable for being the source of gold for the so-called Tabora Sovereign, a 15 Rupee coin locally minted by German forces in 1916 showing an image of an elephant and Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Tanzania was a colony of Germany at the time (Deutsch Ostafrika) and gold production from the Sekenke mine could not be exported due to a wartime naval blockade. Approximately 250 kg of unrefined Sekenke mine gold bullion (containing 15-20% silver) was used to mint 16,198 coins.
