Molybdenite and Scheelite was discovered on Spilsby Island in October 1963.
The state government released the area for prospecting, subsequent diamond drilling found the deposit to be too spasmodic to be of economic importance.

The Island has since been reserved from the operations of the Mining Act, meaning all mining or fossicking is now prohibited on the island (which is quite common on most of South Australia's islands).
